PENGEMBANGAN KOMIK STRIP SEBAGAI MEDIA EDUKASI PENGELOLAAN SAMPAH BAGI SISWA SMP DI UBUD BALI

Abstract

Waste management has become one of the major environmental challenges affecting the sustainability of tourism in Bali, particularly in the tourist destination of Ubud. The low level of public awareness regarding proper waste management highlights the need for environmental education from an early age through engaging and effective learning media. This study aims to describe the theme, form, and students' responses to the use of strip comics as an educational medium to improve waste management awareness among junior high school students in the Ubud tourism area, Bali. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis involving teachers and junior high school students in the Ubud tourism area. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to identify the characteristics of the developed strip comics and students' responses toward the educational media. The findings indicate that strip comics featuring environmental conservation and waste management themes, presented through colorful cartoon-style illustrations, simple language, and storylines closely related to students' daily lives, successfully attracted students' attention, enhanced their understanding, and increased their awareness of proper waste management practices. Students responded positively, perceiving the strip comics as an engaging, communicative, and effective educational medium for fostering environmental awareness, particularly in tourism areas. Therefore, strip comics can serve as an alternative environmental learning medium to enhance students' awareness of waste management while supporting environmental conservation and the sustainable development of tourism in Bali.
