Animation is not only an entertainment medium but also an artistic form that utilizes visual elements to construct narratives and aesthetic experiences. One of the most notable animated films in this regard is Perfect Blue (1997) by Satoshi Kon, which is widely recognized for its complex psychological themes and powerful visual storytelling. This study aims to analyze the application of visual aesthetics in Perfect Blue and examine how visual elements contribute to narrative delivery and the psychological portrayal of the main character. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through observation of the film’s narrative structure, characters, camera angles, and lighting techniques. The findings reveal that the film’s visual aesthetics are constructed through various cinematographic techniques, including close-up, medium close-up, long shot, and extreme long shot, which enhance emotional expression, create tension, and reinforce psychological perspectives. Furthermore, the strategic use of lighting and color contrast effectively represents the protagonist’s shifting mental state while emphasizing themes of identity, social pressure, and the blurred boundary between reality and illusion. The study concludes that the visual elements in Perfect Blue function not only as aesthetic components but also as effective narrative devices that convey meaning and psychological experiences to the audience. Therefore, the film serves as a significant example of visual aesthetics in animation, successfully integrating artistic expression with narrative depth.
